Check How Often and How to Clean Your Humidifier

Cleaning intervals and usable detergents differ by product, so look up the tank care section of the manual by your unit's model name first.

Is the cleaning done once you refill the water?

Even if you change the water, wiping the inside of the tank and the vibrator remains. The Korea Consumer Agency's 2011 care tips, introduced by Seoul, say to replace water that is a day old and to wipe the tank and vibrator every two days with a soft cloth or sponge.

In this material, changing the water goes in the following order. If your model's manual has its own method, follow that.

1. Pour out the leftover water. Tip out the water on the vibrator side toward the drain opening marked on the product.
2. Put in about one fifth of a tank of water and shake to rinse. Rinse at least twice, then fill with fresh water.

That interval is the general care tip from 2011. It doesn't mean that recent products with an auto-dry function all have to be wiped every two days.

When do you wash a humidifier that uses auto-dry?

For the LG Hydro Tower and Hydro Essential, washing the tank once every two weeks is recommended when you use auto-dry after every humidifying session. If you turn auto-dry off or stop it partway, don't apply this interval as it is; check that model's care guidance.

When washing, remove the water purifying filter from the tank and wipe with a soft cloth. Even with auto-dry on, keep track of the tank washing day separately.

Which parts can you use neutral detergent on?

In the LG FAQ, the part allowed to take neutral detergent is the stainless steel tank. The Hydro Essential's plastic tank and other parts aren't covered by that allowance. Rather than memorizing "neutral detergent for humidifier cleaning," first sort out which part you're about to wash.

The 2011 Consumer Agency material also has a neutral detergent cleaning method, but it can't take precedence over a product's own restrictions on detergents. If you've used detergent on a part the manual allows, rinse thoroughly so no residue is left.

How do you store it when you won't use it for a while?

Empty the water left in the tank and vibrator and store it dry. For the two LG products, the guidance is to also remove the water purifying filter when not in use for a long time.

For an ordinary humidifier that has sat unused for two or three days, the 2011 Consumer Agency tip is to wash the tank and vibrator before turning it on again. For models with a separate reuse procedure after storage, follow the matching section of the manual.

If you buy a new one, how do the two humidifiers differ?

The two LG models whose cleaning methods we looked at differ in size as well as tank material. If you plan to put one in a narrow room, measure the width and depth of the spot first.

The Essential is 270 mm in both width and depth, so it takes up less space of the two candidates. The Tower is worth comparing if you need a bigger tank and more output, but the unit is also larger and the air-cleaning filter needs care. Even with an auto-dry function, you still wash the tank separately for both, so neither suits the aim of skipping cleaning. Check prices through the links, as of the check date.

After you compare dimensions, also look at the installation clearances in the product manual. Fitting the unit in the spot is not the same as leaving room around it.
